VADSØ – In the eastern reaches of Arctic Norway, by the Varangerfjord, the tradition of sauna is strong. In cold climate nothing beats hot steam. HALLSTEIN has designed the newly opened public sauna, Horisontti sauna, for the city of Vadsø. It is located on the tip of the wave breaker in Ytrebyfjæra – the eastern beach. Designed as a simple, light timber structure, it carries the warmth of the Finnish forests. The outside burnt to ashes will sustain the harshest of weathers from the Barents sea.
Kven artists Åsne Kummeneje Mellem and Benedict Beldam have worked in close collabouration with HALLSTEIN, and developed integrated artworks expanding the concept of both sauna experience, kven culture, traditional handcrafting and the horizon.
