HALLSTEIN

A Norwegian landscape and architectural design studio creating beautiful, comfortable and simplistic indoor and outdoor spaces from Oslo and Vadsø.

Although our projects mainly find their homes above the Polar Circle and around Oslo, our combined overseas experiences have sprinkled a touch of international magic into our studio. Here, we believe in the power of learning every day. From everybody who knows more and better, with shoulders we can stand on.

We cherish the relationships we build with our clients, focusing on smaller projects that allow us to deeply understand and problem-solve together with those we work with. By doing so, we create personalised spaces that reflect the character of each client. Our multilingual team ensures we can chat and collaborate with clients from all corners of the globe.

At HALLSTEIN, whether we are designing an object, a piece of architecture or a landscape, every project is a unique story.

TEAM

Hallstein Guthu grew up in Vadsø in the very northeast of Norway. Upon completing his architecture studies in 2005 at NTNU – the Norwegian University of Science and Technology – in Trondheim, Hallstein moved to Vienna, Austria, to work at Coop Himmelb(l)au. Between 2007 and 2012 Hallstein worked at Foster+Partners in London, after which he returned to Oslo, Norway, to work with MMW architects. HALLSTEIN was founded in Oslo on the 18th July 2016.

Hailing from the Arctic, Hallstein proudly embraces and curiously investigates Kven heritage, and seeks ways to naturally infuse it into the studio’s contemporary practices. Today, Hallstein remains actively involved in studying and promoting current and traditional design and architecture from the North of Norway, serving as a board member of NODA – Northern Norway’s Design and Architecture Centre and Fortidsminneforeningen / National Trust of Norway – Finnmark

Zoe, Yan Zou, born in China, finished her master degree of Landscape Architecture in 2017 at AHO – the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Her graduating design project is called A Bath of Ice and Fire and was supervised by Luis Callejas. Afterwards, Zoe moved to Graz, Austria, and worked at Klaus Loenhart´s Terrain Studio. After receiving a bachelor in Landscape Architecture from Shenyang Architectural University, Zoe worked at Beijing-based international landscape studio Turenscape. She worked in the Department of Ecocity between 2012 and 2014. Since autumn 2018, Zoe has been a part of our team.

Sherina Jhunjhnuwala grew up in Hong Kong. After receiving her bachelors degree in 2019 at University of Virginia – School of Architecture, she moved back to her roots in India, working at the intersection of architecture, preservation and interiors. Together with a colleague, Sherina renovated a 200 year old home in Colva – a coastal town in Goa, India. Afterwards, she worked at Orient Occident Atelier and DEFT in Hong Kong. In 2023, Sherina began her Masters in Architecture at AHO – the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Sherina joined our team summer 2024.
